Four voices in the chorus agreed to sing Christmas, and six little angels coming down from heaven to celebrate the arrival of a tender Baby Jesus singing in Greek, French and Latin, while St. Joseph prepares a cloth to wrap the baby.
This song represents an example of that popular kind of funny “Noel” that was in vogue in the 16th century: the invitation to sing a “Noé falot”, that is a bizarre Christmas carol, is contained in the song’s text itself. The song brings us back to a simple faith showing Child Jesus and the Madonna with a familiar feeling and the angels as lively children.
The song was collected by Franca Orengo thanks to Pier Giorgio and Giovanni Bonino brothers in Abbadia di Pinerolo, who also provided a lot more material and information. The song is in the collection “Noelz & chansons nouvellement composez tant en vulgaire françoys que savoysien dict patoys. Par Nicolas Martin musicien en la cité Saint Jean de Morienne en Savoye.” of 1555.
