La streina / La Trêve de Noël

from Concerto di Natale by TRE MARTELLI

/

about

A wishing song for the long upcoming new year, asking for a gift (strenna) a typical dove-shaped cake. The “strenna” tradition was once widespread especially in the Langhe. According to the witnesses, there was a new and an old way for the strenna. In the first, the children went up and about on the first day of the year, singing and asking for very little gifts, fruit or sweets.

The old strenna instead took place between adults on the Epiphany.
Wanderers and beggars also asked for the gifts.
The term strenna seems to root from the goddess Strenia, pagan divinity of ancient Rome, symbol of the new year, prosperity and good luck.

The song is followed by a bourée composed by Enzo G. Conti and inspired by the truce proclaimed in Christmas 1914 which took place in the trenches during the First World War between French, British and German soldiers who sang songs and exchanged gifts.
