According to the Gospel of Luca, the very first ones to rush around the manger where the divine baby lay, were the shepherds, and that is the reason why they always appear in the Nativity scenes, playing typical instruments such as bagpipes, shawns, etc. Gelindo, a well-known character of the piedmontese Christmas, according to the tradition was the shepherd who came first, following the comet star that led the people to the hut where Jesus was born. This character is so famous in our tradition that countless idioms are referred to him and, until recent times, in many places of Piedmont the music played during the midnight mass was called “La pastorale di Gelindo
