The Sacred Family’s flight into Egypt according to the account in the apocryphal Gospels changes, in this song, into a journey to Bethlehem in which Mary, in an advanced state of pregnancy, must quench her thirst and hunger. A fountain and an apple tree, found on the path, are not at the right height to allow her to drink and eat, but miraculously the fountain rises and the tree lowers.
Song collected by Franco Castelli in San Michele (AL).
Telling the same story (apocryphal Gospel called the Pseudo-Matthew, chapter 20) many popular ballads exist throughout Europe, the most similar to this version is the catalan on while the most famous is certainly the british "The Cherry Tree Carol".
